Clay vessels appear very early in the archaeological record. USC Pacific Asia Museum notes ceramics more than 10,000 years old as earthenware fired at relatively low temperatures. Museum timelines for Chinese ceramics discuss early pottery long before porcelain. Exact “first” dates shift as sites are published; use excavation reports and museum timelines for current figures rather than a single blog number.
Coiling and forming
Coiling — building walls from rolled clay ropes — is a widespread ancient and modern method. It remains a standard studio technique for hollow sculpture (see Crafting Methods). The potter’s wheel is a separate technology for revolving forms; much sculpture never needs a wheel.
Sculpture versus vessel
Cultures have long made both useful pots and figurative or architectural ceramics. The Getty’s sculpture overview traces three-dimensional art across materials; clay is one durable medium among others. Chinese tomb figures, European porcelain figures, and studio ceramics of the twentieth century all sit in that longer story without requiring a single inventor.
Modern studio sculpture
Artists such as Peter Voulkos, Betty Woodman, and Karen Karnes have been internationally exhibited ceramic artists. Their careers are documented in museum collections and monographs; this page does not attempt a ranking. For contemporary makers, survey books such as Amber Creswell Bell’s Clay collect studio practices without claiming a closed list.
Not advice and not a studio class. CeramicSculpture.com explains ceramic sculpture in general terms from published sources. It is not a ceramics school, kiln service, or safety trainer. Clay, kilns, and glazes can be hazardous; follow your instructor, clay maker, and kiln manufacturer. Nothing here promises a result in your studio.
