  Woodfired Ceramics
  Curator: Ron Meyers
  April 7 through April 29, 2000

The premise for this exhibit was to bring to the Atlanta area a group
of potters whose work I have admired, who make functional work
(or at least pay homage to it), who use wood fired kilns.

As a potter who works primarily in low-fired, painted earthenware and
asks very    little from my kiln other than to melt the glaze, I have looked
on in admiration over the past fifteen years or so at the renewal of interest
among many potters to return to using wood as a heat source to fire their
kilns. These potters have built kilns of various shapes and sizes that they
fire anywhere from one to two days or, as many as eight to ten days, of
what is a pretty labor intensive activity. I am in awe of their energy,
commitment, and passion for the process.

Unlike the firing of my work, these potters rely on the potential of the
firing process to enrich the surface of the work and bring it to life. The
results can be vary rich in color and texture, and can be amazing

Ron Meyers is a studio potter and Professor Emeritus from the University
of Georgia where he taught for over 20 years. He maintains his studio in
Athens, GA, exhibits his work nationally and presents ceramic workshops
throughout the United States.  Carr McCuiston
