Brief History
and Résumé
"There is nothing efficient about magic," said Peter Callas in a
conversation reported in The Studio Potter ( December 1982 ).
For
more than 20 years Callas has been on a purposeful, fruitful,
exhausting and
exhilarating quest for magic, the organic kiln magic
created by the timeless, natural ash
woodfiring process.
Peter Callas first visited Japan in the early 1970's, initially to find a
calligraphy instructor for work on porcelain, but he soon dedicated
his travels to seeking out old kilns. Traveling through
Tokoname,
Iga, and Shigaraki,
he stayed with Goro Suzuki and at the compound
of Takahashi Rakusai,
helping build an anagama kiln. Meeting with
master potter Jun Isezake from
Bizen was a major influence.
Continuing through Kyoto, Bizen and
Kyushu, up through Hagi and
back to Tokyo, Callas absorbed the tradition and spirit of
Japanese
pottery and in 1975 began building his own anagama kiln, the first of
several, as he searched for a way to harness a certain irrationality for
both his own work and that done in collaboration with Peter
Voulkos.
While continuing to
collaborate with Peter Voulkos, Callas is carving out
an increasingly noteworthy independent career, exhibiting in
one-man
and group shows at locations around the world. The twisted,
slabbed,
torn and penetrated forms he creates are only enhanced by the rigors
of woodfiring, a process which, however unpredictable, Callas has
nevertheless mastered. Mac McCloud, writing in
Ceramics; Art and Perception (
March 1998 ) "an acknowledged expert
in the arcane craft of anagama wood
kiln firing" and notes that his
work "reveals a reverence for early Japanese
folk-pottery concepts and
texture as well as reflecting the general aesthetic of
Abstract - Expressionism..."
